This hymn by Frederick William Faber was adapted and given new music for use in our 2023 Maundy Thursday service of worship centered around the seven last words of Christ. The music makes use of a mournful descending bass line while the lyrics (which have been heavily adapted from the original) invite the worshiper to sit awhile and reflect on the cross and the seven last words our Lord spoke there.

O come and mourn with me awhile;
And tarry here the cross beside;
O come, together let us mourn;
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified!
How fast His hands and feet are nailed;
His blessed tongue with thirst is tied,
His failing eyes are blind with blood:
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified!

Come, join me here beneath the cross,
Remember how for us he died.
Behold the mercy of our God
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified!
O break, O break, hard heart of mine!
My selfish lust and guilty pride
A broken heart, He’ll not despise
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified!

Seven times He spoke, sev’n words of love;
And all three hours His silence cried
For mercy on the souls of men;
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified!
Obedient to His Father’s will
It was His own fixed love that tied
Him tighter far than helpless nails;
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified!

O love of God! O sin of man!
In this dread act His strength is tried;
And victory remains with Love;
For He, our Lord, is crucified!
